An Occupational Therapy screening assesses your child's functional development, motor coordination and sensory processing abilities. The therapist will observe fine and gross motor skills, cognitive skills, postural stability, strength and range of motion. The goal is to identify any possible areas of concern that may could the child's ability to perform age-appropriate daily activities.
A Speech screening evaluates your child's communication skills, including expressive language, language comprehension, articulation and/or phonological skills, and social interaction. The therapist will listen to your child's speech intelligibility, and assess how they use, understand and interpret language to determine if there are any areas where they might need extra support.
Both screenings are typically brief and just help us understand if further evaluation is needed. They're not tests but more of a way to see how your child is doing in these areas.
During the evaluation you can expect to discuss your concerns with the therapist. A therapist will conduct an in depth evaluation through parent questionnaire, clinical observation, and formal standardized testing.
An OT evaluation involves a comprehensive assessment of your child's physical, cognitive and sensory-motor development, along with his/her ability to complete daily tasks, such as writing, eating, dressing, and playing. The therapist will observe their use of fine and gross motor skills, visual-motor integration, postural stability/balance, and sensory processing to understand if there are any areas of difficulty or delay that could impact their daily activities.
A Speech evaluation focuses on your child's ability to communicate effectively. This includes expressive language, receptive language, pragmatic language, and non-verbal communication. The therapist will assess how well your child expresses themselves, understands instructions, and interacts with others to identify any speech or language challenges.
The evaluations are more detailed than screenings and therefore take longer to complete; time varies based on what areas need to be evaluated. Based on results of the evaluation, the therapist will determine if therapy is warranted. The goal is to develop a detailed understanding of your child's strengths and challenges to create a customized treatment plan.
OT treatment helps your child improve their ability to perform everyday tasks. The therapist works with the child on functional skills, such as fine motor tasks, coordination, balance, and sensory processing. Through play and structured activities, the therapist will guide your child to build strength, focus, and independence in tasks that are important for school, home, and social activities.
Treatment services include:
Speech treatment focuses on improving communication skills. This might include helping your child with speaking clearly, using language appropriately, understanding language, building social communication skills, or improving feeding/swallowing skills, if needed. The therapist uses activities, games, and exercises to strengthen these skills, making it easier for your child to express themselves and understand others.
Treatment services include:
We offer family training and education during every session for carryover and generalization of therapy techniques. Carry over activities are available upon request.
OT and Speech co-treatment involves both an occupational therapist and a speech therapist working together with your child in the same session. This approach addresses both communication and daily functioning skills at the same time. For example, while the speech therapist may work on language and social communication, the OT might focus on fine motor skills or sensory processing concerns. By combining their expertise, they can create a more holistic approach, helping your child improve in multiple areas such as expressive language, understanding, and engaging in everyday activities. This allows your child to make progress in both communication and functional skills in a coordinated, comprehensive way.
A parent information session is a meeting led by an OT and Speech therapist where both therapists explain how they can support your child’s development. They will share strategies and activities to help improve your child’s skills in areas like communication, daily tasks, motor coordination, sensory processing, and social interactions. These session provides insight into how therapy works, what progress might look like, and how you can be involved in supporting your child at home. It’s a chance for you to ask questions and learn ways to help your child thrive in both their therapy sessions and everyday life.
Teletherapy is a form of therapy that takes place remotely, using video conferencing technology, phone calls, or online platforms to connect a therapist with a client. This option allows individuals to receive therapeutic services from the comfort of their home, making it convenient for those who might have difficulty attending in-person sessions due to distance, scheduling, or other barriers.
Teletherapy is available upon request in certain cases, and its appropriateness depends on factors such as the client’s age and diagnosis. In some situations, teletherapy may be a suitable alternative, while in others, in-person sessions may be more effective. The decision to offer teletherapy is made on a case-by-case basis, ensuring that it aligns with the client’s needs and therapeutic goals.
If you believe teletherapy could be helpful for you or your child, please feel free to inquire, and we can discuss if it's the right fit for your situation.
